This Privacy Policy outlines how Explain AI (‘we’, ‘us’, ‘our’) collects, uses, and shares data when you use our Chrome extension.
We collect two types of data - the text you select and the context around it. We only collect this data
when you trigger Explain AI. If you simply select text but don’t trigger our extension, no text is
collected. If you're visiting a public PDF, we will generally collect the pdf link.
The 'context' refers to the words around the selected text, typically set to 100 words before and after
the selected text. You can modify this context length as per your preference, and can set it to 0 words
if desired (i.e. no context).
It is important to note that we do not collect any personally identifiable information such as
names,
email addresses, or other personal details. Our collection is strictly limited to the selected text
and
its context.
We collect the selected text directly from your browser window and the context using the DOM tree, a common practice in Chrome extensions. We only collect this data when you trigger our service, maintaining your privacy when our extension is not in use.
Our data collection is solely for the purpose of providing our service – offering context-based explanations for the text you select. Without this data, our service would simply not be able to function. In other words, we cannot explain anything to you if we don't know what that thing is.
We transmit the selected text and context to our secure server for processing. Our server employs a
Large Language Model, which could either be a local model or a managed service like OpenAI, to process
this data and return an explanation.
We store anonymized logs of the selected text and context data on our cloud run for a maximum of 30
days. These logs help us improve our service and offer better explanations. However, these logs are
completely anonymous.
All communications between your client device and our backend server are encrypted over HTTPS to ensure
data security.
We may share anonymized selected text and context data with third-party services, like OpenAI, for the purpose of generating explanations. These third parties do not receive any personally identifiable information and the data sharing is strictly limited to the functioning of our service. We do not sell, rent or otherwise disclose your personal information to any other third parties.
We retain anonymized logs of selected text and context for a maximum of 30 days. After this period, all data is permanently deleted from our systems.
We implement appropriate security measures to protect your data. This includes secure data transmission over HTTPS and the use of secure, anonymous logging systems.
